The SIGMA DELTA PHI (ZETA CHAPTER), University of the Philippines was founded through the initiative of Mrs. Adeline C. Stevens, Chairman of the National Advisory Board, on Feb. 24, 1931. The Mother Chapter i located in the University of Michigan.

The first chapter members were Mrs. Alicia Palma-Bautista, Miss Lourdes Paredes, Miss Gloria G. Lucero, and the late Mrs. Catalina S. Manguerra.

The purpose of the sorority is to form a strong bond among the women interested in speech and allied arts of the various Universities; to form a strong link between the Universities and their former students; to promote social and intellectual intercourse among its members and to cultivate a closer bond of friendship. It is an exclusive upper classmen sorority.

The SIGMA DELTA PHI has a pin. A pin by the way is a necessary accoutrement of every sorority proving to the "OUTS" that a girl is an "IN". SIGMA DELTA PHI's started out to get a pin that would tell everybody who they were but got the letter a bit confuse. Maybe they arranged them thus on purpose because they figured everybody knows who they are.

During the scant two years and a half of its existence the SIGMA DELTA PHI has grown rapidly in activity and numbers. Its development and success maybe credited to the generous support of all its members.

At its meetings, social activities are combined with vocational activities. At every monthly meeting, held by turns in the homes of the sorority members, the club attempts to bring and create a social atmosphere centering around the Arts.

A literary musical program was given by the sorority in the Little Theater sometime ago. The Little Theater was transformed into an artistic marvel for the occasion by the members of the sorority. A tableau depicting the different branches of Art was presented and was very much liked. The policy of offering literary musical programs to the students of the campus will be continued in the future, as its success assures the sorority that the campus will look forward to it as an affair of exquisite beauty and novel effects.

The policy of expansion of the SIGMA DELTA PHI will be progressive, yet it will embody a conservative spirit of careful selection and supervision of whatever members the sorority will choose to accept. It is the sincere hope of rthe sorority that it will maintain its established position as a powerful and progressive organization on the University campus.

1955 – The Los Baños chapter was founded by Emma Juliano Ramos ’51, through the initiative of then Grand Archon Nenet Lazo Arambulo ‘53

“Traditions We Want to Keep”

During the first half of the 19th century, UP Los Baños (then UP College of Agriculture) sororities were unreal. The biggest student group at the time was the UP Students Catholic Action (UPSCA) not just because of the influence of the UP Diliman Rector, the late Fr. Delaney, but also because it was easy for students to join up. However, there were already fraternities like the Upsilon Sigma Phi which was the most popular on campus.

It was not till the later part of 1955 that a young Dentistry graduate from UP Diliman decided, through the encouragement of some Diliman Sigma Deltans and Upsilonians, to organize the “crème de la crème” of the female student population, and put up the Sigma Delta Phi, Los Baños Chapter. Since she had previously graduated Dentistry from UP Diliman in 1951, she had to enroll in a special cooking class at the Department of Home Technology (now College of Human Ecology) to qualify for the position in the sorority. The young lady was no other than Emma P. Juliano ‘51. Through the support of the Diliman Brods and Sis; particularly Brod Fernando A. Pedrosa ’52, she successfully put up the sorority and later became the first Grand Archon of the Chapter.

Membership to the Sigma Delta Phi was purely invitational; a fusion of brains, beauty, talent and popularity is what it took (and still takes) to get into the sorority. Although no written criterion was ever formulated, the screening was primarily done thru scheduled personal interviews which Emma performed herself. She would scrutinize one’s academic record and display of talent in the arts. The sorority constitution states that no student shall be approved membership to the sorority unless she has a good scholastic standing, thus, the honor list was the always the easiest way for Emma to recruit new members.

Another of the sorority’s constitution states that members shall not undergo any form of preliminary initiation therefore no physical initiations from the truckload of sisters was performed. January 15, 1955 was very eventful for both the “initiates” and “masters” as they went to San Pablo for lunch.

When they got back to UP Los Baños, an hour of final “brainwashing” was done at the Department of Plant Pathology building. Unknown to the “initiates”, was that the Upsilonian Brods were waiting outside to welcome the new sisters into the group. Thirty-seven sorority members came out successfully after which dinner was shared by both Sis and Brods right after the rites.

Guided by its first adviser, Professor Dolores Barile (Dean of Women at the time) and later Miss. Justina Mabesa, the sorority became true to its objective of promoting social and intellectual intercourse thru the arts, and often the charter members found themselves acting on stage or singing and dancing in programs and convocations.

The University Council Committee for Student Organizations and Activities did not permit any formal organization to hold a social affair such as a sorority ball without having produced or sponsored a cultural activity hence, the sorority sponsored numerous dramas and musicals, sometimes with the Upsilonian Brods. It was not until January 12, 1957, that the first Sorority ball was held at the Molawin Mess Hall (now the ACCI Dormitory). The highlight of the affair was the pinning ceremony, with Miss Tenny Mabesa pinning the 1955-1956 Batch, who in turn pinned the 1956-1957 Batch of sisters. For enjoyment, Elsa C. Cosico and Cora Cacdac Flores baked a huge cake with the Sigma Delta Phi Seal and a Single candle as decoration. Dance favors were given out to Upsilonians present who pulled ribbons off a cake having the names of corresponding Sigma Deltans. The Upsilonians in turn get to dance the Sis whose name was on the ribbon.

The Sigma Delta Phi stands for leadership making student politics part of student of Batch ’55 as so many of them were found joining motorcades and house to house campaigns. As student life settles down, sorority members found themselves a rightful place under the sun.

1971 – The Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association was founded by Nelia de los Reyes Sancho-Liao ’68 and Celia Diaz Laurel ’48, First President.

March 18, 1983 – the Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association presented the University of the Philippines with a Professorial Chair in Humanities.

August 20, 1983 - the Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association presented the College of Music, University of the Philippines with a Professorial Chair in Music.

October 2, 1986 – the Sigma Delta Phi Alumnae Association presented the University of the Philippines with a Benigno Aquino Professorial Chair.

1993 – In celebration of its 60th year anniversary, Sigma Delta Phi refurbished rooms 119 and 121 of Palma Hall.
