THE AWARD
Mariang Maya, the heroine of the Filipino zarzuela written by Virginia R. Moreno for the 1953 Sigma Delta Phi musical production, epitomises womanhood at her best.
Since Sigma Delta Phi's Golden Jubilee in 1983 and every five years thereafter, the Alumnae chapter of the Sorority has embarked on a search for the Sigma Deltans who, in a membership renowned for its eclat, manage nevertheless, to exude a more luminous brilliance.
To these extraordinary women is bestowed the Mariang Maya Award, the highest salute that Sigma Delta Phi can bestow on a sister.
They are chosen from various fields and are judged in accordance with their contribution and commitment to the upliftment of the quality of life of those around them. Additionally, they must be outstanding achievers in their chosen fields and must have excellent scholastic records.
